Curriculum
Work to enhance our curriculum is ongoing. Staff is constantly looking at how we continue to innovate so that we can further meet the needs of the children we serve. Montessori turned 100 in 2007 and we have continued to bring Montessori philosophy and methodology into the 21st century. 2008-09 marks the move of our 9-12 program into the age of wireless technology that will benefit all children school-wide. Along with this we have continued to utilize the Internet and will continue to add additional tools to support children's learning of technology.
The current edition the of 3-6,
6-9 and 9-12 Scope and Sequence Guide is a working
document that outlines the timing and depth of instruction by
which all children are served. It identifies
expectations that have been developed in concert, by
utilizing age appropriate practices so that children are
afforded opportunities to excel. To this end, The New
School has and will continue to work at meeting high
standards for continuous improvement and accreditation by the
Independent Schools Association of the Central States
(ISACS), North Central Association (NCA) and the American
Montessori Society (AMS). You can download the current edition
of the Scope and Sequence Guide here.
This document was created through the
collaborative efforts of The New School Montessori staff as leaders in
Montessori education. The skills identified and
expanded upon signify emergent abilities at each level.
Each is sequenced according to age appropriateness and
reflects a specific gradation that enables those employing
the use of this document to clearly identify the proper
preparatory steps that are required for the child’s
successful movement within each objective. Based solely
on age appropriateness for each individual child, the
sequencing of all objectives do not make up a lockstep
continuum. There is no finite separation between levels
or sequence that would signify the advancement of all
children collectively and thus, no exact “ending
point” for final exit, as learning is expected to be
life-long. Each child remains their own individual,
working with these objectives as a checklist to fulfill their
own needs in a manner that is timely and best meets their
abilities for that advancement.
