Enrollment Process at The New School Montessori
The New School Montessori’s marketing efforts, its
admissions policies and its financial aid program are all directed
toward achieving full enrollment, consistent with two principles.
First, we want to enroll children who are, as our brochure states,
“at a level of maturity to be comfortable and productive in
our environment.” Second, we seek to maintain a racially,
ethnically and economically diverse student body.
Parent Observation: Parents are invited
to visit the school, observing in the classroom for 1 to 1.5 hours
and receiving a tour of the school. These visits for adults are
scheduled in the morning at 8:30 or 9:00. An interview that follows
the observation and tour follows the parents’ questions and
interests rather than a preset format, although topics such as the
school’s educational philosophy, its organization, the role
of parents and finances are discussed. The Assistant Director tries
to convey to the parent “who we are” and how The New
School related to both the Montessori community and the larger
educational community.
Application: When you visit, you will
receive an application. If you return the application, it must be
accompanied by a $25 nonrefundable application fee.
Open Houses: Our open houses are held on
the first Sunday in November and February. Adults and children are
invited to see the school and visit with our staff and current New
School parents.
Child Visits: After receiving your
application, we schedule a special time for your child to visit in
the classroom. In place of tests or screening instruments, we work
with and observe the child in our environment to see if s/he is at
a level of maturity to be comfortable and productive in that
environment. The length of the visit varies with age of the
child—from 20 to 30 minutes for 3-year olds to a full day for
9 to 12 year olds.
Financial Aid: Applications are due in
March. The Student Service for Financial Aid reviews the numbers
and advises The New School Montessori as to what amount each applicant family
should be able to pay. Financial aid decisions are made by a
committee, which includes the Director, Assistant Director, Board
President, Treasurer and Diversity Chair.
